PERSONALIZING WITH PERSONALITY

It’s often easier to build than renovate a house, if only for the fresh canvas you begin with. Yet for this homeowner and her family, renovation was a better choice, thanks to her creativity and resourcefulness in having the family’s signature on a pre-loved home.
She found the perfect canvas in the three-story house hidden away in a quiet village within the busy Mandaluyong district. The house is spacious enough for her family of five, with ample room for visiting relatives. More importantly, what attracted her was the neutral interiors, which gave her leeway to personalize it according to her own taste.
“I immediately saw potential in the two-year-old house; it had a modern but plain feel that made it much easier to alter!” says the lady of the house. However, this also meant major work, one that took six months to finish with the help of interior deisgn firm Sohu Designs. Together with close confidant interior designer Jen Sohu and her team led by Danica Lu Chiu-Lee, the homeowner set about in creating her own R&R place, or as she calls it, her rechar and rest sanctuary.
The two-storey house only contains the essentials: a combination of custom-made and off-the-floor pieces, which are just enoug to make each space function to its expected purpose

HOMES
At the age of 16, he was already working and building his empire while other kids were still concerned with homework or their lives. “Malaking sakripisyo ‘yun, kailangang matibay ka,” he shares.
Initially living in a home close to their farm, Don and his wife Claire ae now the owners of a three-level complex designed and created by siblings Jaime and Jesy Cruz, who have decided to create their own firm, Alero Design Studio, Jamie was in charge of the overall architecture and Jesy took care of the interiors.
Since the client didn’t really know what he wanted to create upon buying the lot, the home grew vertically. Looking like a grand mansion or hotel on the outside, the three-storey structure strategically caters to several functions. Each storey has its own story: the ground floor functions as the company headquarters; above, spanning 400 sqm is the family room. The topmost level is currently a multipurpose hall waiting to become a floor for Don’s motorbike collection. Don consulted a different architect before Jaime and Jessy took over. This meant a year’s worth of design revisions and another year for construction. In charge of the construction company, MSC Constructions.
As for the site visits, the siblings were more than eager to check up on the property because the project is just a block or two away from their home. They had several revisions to the initial design to cater to the family’s overall convenience.
“Our company believes that as designer, our true success is when we exceed our clients’ expectations and make them happy with the end result.”
